Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, allowing a vial to be safely accessed multiple times. The standard reconstitution solution for lyophilized research material.
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth, which is what allows a vial to be accessed more than once without the contents becoming contaminated.
It is the standard diluent for reconstituting lyophilized research peptides wherever the resulting solution will be stored rather than used immediately. Plain sterile water contains no preservative and is suitable only for single-session use.
Supplied for laboratory research use only.
A reconstituted peptide solution is an excellent growth medium. Without a bacteriostatic agent, any organism introduced when the stopper is pierced can multiply. Benzyl alcohol at 0.9% suppresses that growth without measurably degrading most peptides over normal storage periods.
Bacteriostatic agents inhibit multiplication rather than killing organisms outright. That is sufficient for multi-access vials, and uses a far lower concentration of preservative than a bactericidal approach would require.
A small number of preparations are specified for reconstitution in plain sterile water or dilute acetic acid rather than bacteriostatic water. Where a protocol specifies a diluent, follow it.
Bacteriostatic water is a laboratory reagent. It is supplied for research use and is not a medicine.
Supplied sterile and sealed. Each lot is manufactured to pharmaceutical-grade specification with verified benzyl alcohol content and sterility.
Inspect the vial before use. The solution should be completely clear and colourless, with an intact seal.
